Developed by educationists Boris and Elena Nikitin. They raised their seven children in believing firmly in the natural ability to learn and adjust to environments and block design. They transformed their home into play and learning environments and developed highly intelligent learning materials - "Build Up Games". Children need support in learning specially with perception, concentration and creativity. These 16 wooden cubes with six differently coloured surfaces provide fun training in recognizing and combining colours and shapes. The idea is to put the coloured surfaces together to reproduce patterns ranging from simple to complex.

Two booklets full of attractive designs lead children up from easier to harder ones. Both the booklets contain patterns for all ages: the complicated patterns can be an exciting challgenge for adults too. Pattern blocks teach children about shapes and geometry, as well as develop their visual discrimination skills and fine motor skills. I've been looking for a set such as this one for quite a while. This is by far the best set that I have come across and the way part is that it is for all ages. The relationships among the side measures and among the angle measures make it very easy to fit the blocks together so little kids pick up certain skills quickly and really well. This is fun and challenging for the whole family. I am extremely satisfied with this purchase as well as the shipping. I received my package two days from my order. Overall I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for an activity that will benefit their children and be fun.

This is a superior toy. Noticeable immediately are the smooth surfaces and well-made cubes, something that feels nice in your hands and invites you to explore. Now, the very first time I introduced these to my grandchildren, they were not all that interested because of their current mode that day, more Imaginext and Smithsonian Astronaut play inclined. On their next visit, however, they took them from the shelf and went to town, working to create an X shape, then numbers. When I saw how enthralled they were with them, taking blocks from one another to build, I decided to purchase a second set. In fact, in order to do some of the more elaborate patterns, you require more than the 16 blocks that come in a set. In playing with the children on the floor, I found my own brain getting some exercise as I turned a cube looking for the proper color combination, and then had to put the graphic in the correct direction. I can see where this set would be good for most any age, including for the elderly seeking synapses stimulation.

While this is pricey, it most definitely is a well-made product that ought to last straight through to my great-grandchildren and beyond. Oh, and the youngest of my grandchild brood liked using them to build and knock over — and the blocks easily withstood this form of play.

Blocks are good, box is already falling apart

Blocks are good but bigger than the ones when I was a child. The box is big with an inset to hold the blocks. After using that about 2 times, the inset falls apart. Would have been so nice to have a box that the blocks fit snugly in with a top that came off and didn't just fold up - the top is also falling apart.
Really, I give the box a 2 star and the blocks a 4 star and I am disappointed because they are expensive.

Very disappointing that the big box where you can see exactly 25 blocks should fit comes with only 16 blocks. The user manuals show designs to build with 25 blocks. our kids were very sad that they could not follow the designed in the manuals because there are not enough blocks. If you look at how the blocks fit in the box, you can see that exactly 25 should have been there. Very strange.

Make patterns out of multi-colored blocks. A childhood classic of my Russian wife. Can't go wrong with wood blocks. Good paint. Good wood. The edges and corners are sharp enough to make clear images, but not a problem at all as far as safety. I have 5 kids, and everyone but the baby wants to play with it. Baby just wants to eat it, but... durable paint.

16 blocks are just a hair over 1.5" each, so you can make a pattern just over 6x6" if square. Funny the booklet with patterns come with patterns that require more than 16 blocks. Boo.

Good toy anyhow. Highly recommended. Interesting side note - it came with 2 booklets. One in English, the other in Russian, which my wife teaches the kids.

I love that they are bright coloured and really help to use imagination and build fine motor and other skills. The range of pictures gives the child a good choice of what to do. It is not easily for her to follow the patterns but she likes making her own designs.They develop creativity and sense of pride once they are finished. Very nice quality. Would definitely recommend!
